Detailed vs Minimal mode

This article will explain the differences between the two modes available for OnINBOX’s A C T feature and how they work.

Why do we have these options?

Minimal and Detailed mode give OnINBOX administrators the option to choose whether or not the users in their organization see risk indicators only for high-risk emails, therefore streamlining those that are safe to interact with.

Detailed mode is the intended experience as banners will be added to all emails, including all shade of grey between high risk and business-as-usual.

What's happening behind the scenes?

OnINBOX uses NLP (Natural Language Processing) to scan the content of an email and look for topics of a sensitive nature and cross-checks these with the security posture of the sender.

For example…
Let’s say you or someone in your organization receives an email asking you to pay an invoice and the language used has a high sense of urgency. If this email is actually a cybercriminal impersonating someone you know, OnINBOX will not only detect that the email has a payment request (money being a sensitive topic), but also the fact that the sender’s identity couldn’t be verified and therefore alert the recipient with red A C T indicators and a text-based banner detailing why this email is a potential threat.

When in Minimal mode, the A C T indicators and text-based banner with an explanation will only appear for high-risk emails such as the example above.

Whereas in Detailed mode, the results for A C T will show inside every email, even if no risks are detected. This means people in your organization will also see the indicators even if it’s safe to interact. The text-based banner still only appears for high-risk emails when in Detailed mode, to explain the risks identified.

Select your preference!
Just to recap, here’s a short summary of each mode...

Minimal mode does what it says on the tin. Keeping alerts minimal by only showing the A C T risk indicators when the email is highly likely to be a threat. This will also be accompanied by a text-based banner to further explain the reasons why.

The Action buttons in OnINBOX Manager’s Settings control the visibility inside every user’s email of ‘Learn more’ and ‘Report’. These will only be visible when the email is highly likely to be a threat. This is to keep things minimal (see what we did there!). However, if you would prefer your users to always have these options available inside every email, even when there’s no risk, then simply activate the ‘Show Action buttons’ option.

Below is an example of an email that has been processed with minimal mode enabled. It passes Authentication and Content and is not from a blacklisted domain. Since OnINBOX has not detected anything so noteworthy as to signify risk, it has not added the banner.

Detailed mode is giving all the detail of every security scan inside every email, regardless of whether it’s safe or not to interact. This means that the A C T indicators will each show an individual result based on what it’s looking for: A green indicator is business as usual or red means a threat has been found. When an email is high risk, a text-based banner accompanies the A C T indicators giving a detailed explanation of the risks OnINBOX has found.

The Action buttons (‘Learn more’ and ‘Report’) will always be visible to your users inside every email when in this mode.

Below is an example of a very similar email to the one above, only this one has detailed mode enabled. As you can see it is not passing all checks 100% but you can still see all of the information that would have been hidden in minimal mode.

Where the above would have been hidden in minimal mode, the below would have the banner applied regardless of setting.

My company opted for minimal mode, can I still use detailed mode?

Yes, individual users can choose to use detailed mode instead of minimal mode. However, if your company has opted for detailed mode, individual users will not be able to change that to minimal mode.

Your organization may have also selected "Let the user decide" in which case you can choose your own mode within your personal panel at oninbox.redsift.com.
